Significance of Mahalaya Amavasai
Falling in the Tamil month of Purattasi, the new moon day known as Mahalaya Amavasai marks the culmination of the Mahalaya Paksha (a 15-day period dedicated to ancestors). It is believed that during this time, the souls of our departed ancestors visit the earth to bless their descendants.
Performing Tharpanam (offering of water and black sesame seeds) on this specific day is considered equivalent to performing it throughout the entire year. It helps in seeking forgiveness, clearing ancestral karmic debts (Pithru Dosham), and ensuring peace and prosperity for future generations.
Rituals and Offerings
Devotees wake up early and take a holy dip in sacred rivers or seas. Guided by priests, they perform the Tharpanam rituals. Feeding the poor (Annadanam) is highly recommended on this day.
It is also a strict custom to offer food to crows before consuming a meal, as crows are believed to be the representatives of the ancestors.
