The Legend of King Mahabali
According to mythology, Kerala was once ruled by an Asura king named Mahabali. His reign was considered the golden era, where everyone was treated equally, and there was no poverty or crime. Feeling insecure about his growing popularity, the Devas sought the help of Lord Vishnu, who took the avatar of Vamana (a dwarf brahmin).
Vamana asked Mahabali for three paces of land. He then grew to cosmic proportions, measuring the earth and the heavens with two steps, and for the third, Mahabali offered his own head. Before pushing him down to the netherworld, Vishnu granted Mahabali a boon to visit his beloved subjects once a year. Onam is the celebration of his annual visit.
Pookkalam and Sadhya
The festival spans ten days, with the most important day being Thiruvonam. People create intricate floral designs known as 'Pookkalam' at their doorsteps to welcome the King. The size of the Pookkalam increases each day of the festival.
The highlight of Onam is the 'Onam Sadhya', a grand vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf. It consists of over 26 traditional dishes, including curries, pickles, papadam, and various types of payasam (desserts). Women perform traditional dances like 'Thiruvathira Kali' wearing the elegant white and gold Kasavu sarees, while men participate in games and the famous snake boat races (Vallam Kali).
