Significance of Varalakshmi Vratham

Varalakshmi Vratham is observed on the Friday immediately preceding the full moon (Pournami) in the Tamil months of Aadi or Aavani. 'Vara' means boons, and Goddess Varalakshmi is believed to grant all the wishes and boons of her devotees.

According to mythology, performing this Vratham is equivalent to worshipping all the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi (Ashtalakshmi). It is primarily performed by married women for the well-being of their husbands and family, bringing peace, wealth, and prosperity into the household.

Kalasham and Rituals

A key part of the ritual involves setting up a 'Kalasham' (a sacred pot). The pot is filled with rice, a lemon, coins, and betel nuts. Mango leaves are placed at the mouth of the pot, and a coconut smeared with turmeric is placed on top. A beautifully decorated face of the Goddess is then attached to the coconut.

Women invite the Goddess into their homes with immense devotion. After chanting sacred hymns like the Ashtalakshmi Stotram, a yellow thread (Nonbu Kayiru) is tied around the right wrist of the women, symbolizing protection and the Goddess's blessings.
