Benefits and Methods of Performing Go Pooja (Cow Worship)

Gomata - The Abode of Deities

In Sanatana Dharma, the cow is not viewed merely as an animal but is deeply revered as 'Gomata' (the Divine Mother). Ancient scriptures describe that the holy cow embodies the presence of the Holy Trinity and all thirty-three crore deities. Worshipping a cow is, therefore, considered equivalent to worshipping all the gods of the Hindu pantheon simultaneously.

Benefits of Performing Go Pooja

  • Eradication of Pitru Dosha: Performing Go Pooja and feeding the cow with Agathi leaves and fruits helps remove ancestral curses (Pitru Dosha) and brings the complete blessings of one's forefathers.
  • Wealth and Prosperity: It is strongly believed that Goddess Mahalakshmi resides in the hindquarters of the cow. Worshipping the cow drives away poverty and ushers in immense wealth and prosperity (Lakshmi Kataksham) to the household.
  • Relief from Navagraha Doshas: The negative influences of the nine planets, particularly the severe effects of Sade Sati (Ezharai Sani), are significantly neutralized by performing this sacred worship.
  • Family Harmony: Regular worship and feeding of cows resolve marital discord, bring peace, and ensure lasting happiness and well-being in the family.

Method of Worship

Before beginning the pooja, the cow should ideally be bathed or wiped clean. Turmeric, kumkum, and sandalwood paste should be applied to its forehead, horns, and hindquarters. Adorn the cow with a flower garland and perform aarti. The most crucial part of the ritual is lovingly feeding the cow with your own hands—offerings typically include Agathi leaves, bananas, jaggery mixed with raw rice, and fresh green grass. Circumambulating the cow three times (Pradakshina) completes the worship and yields maximum spiritual merit.
