Tamil Nadu Spiritual Experience

What is Monthly Krithigai?

In the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, Krittika (Karthigai / Krithigai) is the third of the 27 Nakshatras (stars). This star is deeply associated with the birth and early life of Lord Murugan. According to mythology, Lord Murugan manifested as six sparks from the third eye of Lord Shiva. Six celestial nymphs, known as the Karthigai Pengal (Krittika sisters), raised Him. Hence, He is also called 'Karthikeyan'.

The day the moon aligns with the Krithigai star each month is observed as 'Masik Krithigai' or Monthly Krithigai. It is a day of immense spiritual power, especially for devotees in Tamil Nadu where Murugan is the primary deity.

The Power of Krithigai Fasting

Observing a fast on Krithigai is considered incredibly powerful. Devotees wake up early, clean their homes, and offer special prayers to the deity. Many observe a strict fast or consume only fruits and milk during the day, breaking it in the evening after visiting a Murugan temple.

In Tamil Nadu, major temples like Palani and Thiruchendur witness large gatherings on this day. Pilgrims often undertake short barefoot walks or carry simple offerings to please the Lord. This practice builds spiritual discipline and inner strength.

Spiritual Benefits

Praying on Krithigai is believed to mitigate the malefic effects of Mars (Chevvai Dosham) in one's astrological chart. It helps in removing delays in marriage, clearing debts, and blessing couples with progeny. The divine energy of the day helps in purifying the mind and body.

Chanting powerful hymns like the Skanda Sashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh on this day creates a shield of positive energy around the home. It is a day to surrender all worries to Lord Murugan and seek His protection.
