What is Masi Magam?
Masi Magam falls on the full moon day of the Tamil month Masi when the moon aligns with the Magham star. It is believed that celestial beings and sages descend to earth to take a dip in holy waters on this day. Thus, thousands of devotees gather at rivers, tanks, and sea shores to participate in a ritual bath.
The festival is famous for the 'Theerthavari' ritual, where temple deities are brought in a grand procession to a water body for a ceremonial bath. This act is seen as the divine sanctifying the waters for the benefit of humanity.
Spiritual Significance
Taking a holy dip on Masi Magam is said to cleanse one of their past sins and provide spiritual renewal. While the 'Maha Magham' held once every 12 years in Kumbakonam is the most famous, the annual Masi Magam is also highly potent for seeking divine grace.
The festival emphasizes the importance of purification—both physical and mental. It is an ideal time for self-reflection, seeking forgiveness, and starting anew with a clear and focused mind.
