Significance of Vijayadasami

The word Vijayadasami is derived from 'Vijaya' meaning victory and 'Dasami' meaning the tenth day. It commemorates the victory of Goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura, restoring peace and righteousness to the world. It marks the culmination of the nine-day Navaratri festival.

This day is globally recognized as the day of victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. It is strongly believed that any venture started on this auspicious day is destined for success. Consequently, it is a peak time for launching new businesses, commencing construction, and initiating creative projects.

Vidyarambham - Initiation of Learning

The most prominent tradition of Vijayadasami in South India is 'Vidyarambham' or the formal initiation of children into education. Young children are taught to write their first letters on a tray filled with rice grains, usually under the guidance of elders or teachers. This ritual is believed to invoke the blessings of Goddess Saraswati for a life filled with wisdom.

Beyond academic education, this day is ideal for beginning lessons in music, dance, martial arts, or any specialized craft. It is also the day when students resume reading the books that were kept for worship on the previous day (Saraswati Pooja), symbolizing a renewed commitment to learning.
